| Born in the family of a glass-blower; moved with his parents to Vienna (1899); attended the Hernalser Gymnasium; studied law at the University of Vienna and graduated in 1914; served (1915-1918) in the Austrian imperial army during World War I; between 1920 and 1933 worked as a secretary to the presidents of the Nationalrat (National Council), Karl Seitz, Matthias Eldersch and Karl Renner; was elected a member of the Bundesrat (1933-1934), representing the Social Democratic Party (Sozialdemokratische Partei, SdP); practiced law; imprisoned several times on political charges (1934, 1938, 1944); served as state secretary without portfolio (27 Apr 1945 - 20 Dec 1945) in the provisional government of Renner; elected chairman of the Socialist Party (Sozialistische Partei Österreichs, SPÖ) (15 Dec 1945 - 8 May 1957); member of the National Council (1945-1957); served as Vizekanzler (Vice Chancellor) (20 Dec 1945 - 5 May 1957) in three cabinets of Leopold Figl and in one of Julius Raab; was an active participant in the negotiations for the restoration of Austrian sovereignty (1955); twice elected (5 May 1957, 28 Apr 1963) as Bundespräsident and served two consecutive terms: 22 May 1957 - 22 May 1963 and 22 May 1963 - 28 Feb 1965; died in office (28 Feb 1965).
