21 Feb 1276 pending the occupation of the capital in the prefecture (fǔ | ) of Lin'an (now in Hangzhou, Zhejiang) by the invading army of Yuan, the government of Song ceased to function in accordance with an imperial edict announced on 21 Feb 1276 and immediately implemented (History of Song, ch. 47) [1]

[1] Intermittent attempts to restore the polity were made on the territory of modern provinces of Fujian and Guangdong and adjacent islands (1276-1279) by the rulers claiming succession to Song. The remnants of the former empire were finally subjugated by Yuan after a decisive battle on 19 Mar 1279.
