  1. The (re-)election of Barstow was certified by the Board of State Canvassers on 17 Dec 1855, but Bashford contested the result. Both Barstow and Bashford took the oath of office at separate ceremonies held in Madison on 7 Jan 1856. Barstow refused to vacate the office and continued to exercise the functions of Governor until his resignation on 21 Mar 1856. Lieutenant Governor McArthur assumed executive authority on the same date, but the Supreme Court of Wisconsin rendered judgment in favor of Bashford on 24 Mar 1856. Bashford entered upon the duties of office on the following day.
  2. Following the death of Harvey, who drowned in the Savannah River, Tennessee, on 19 Apr 1862, the functions of the office devolved upon Lieutenant Governor Salomon, who issued a proclamation to that effect on 22 Apr 1862.
