- Carver is said to have been elected ("or rather confirmed") governor after the signing of the Mayflower compact on 11/21 Nov 1621. He was reelected on 23 Mar/2 Apr 1621 and died soon after 5/15 Apr 1621.
- An order passed by the General Court of New Plymouth on 5/15 Jun 1651 authorized the Governor to appoint one of the Assistants to serve as Deputy Governor during his absence. There is no evidence that Bradford made such an appointment prior to his death, and whether such an appointment, if made, remained in effect during the vacancy cannot be established.
- An order passed by the General Court of New Plymouth on 3/13 Jun 1671 empowered the "eldest majestrate" to serve in the office of Deputy Governor during the Governor's incapacity or absence. Aldin was elected an Assistant at the Court of Election on 5/15 Jun 1672, and his name appears first on the list of Assistants. He is therefore presumed to have acted as Deputy Governor during the vacancy.
- Hinckley was appointed to the Council of the Territory and Dominion of New England and took part in its proceedings, formally acquiescing to the authority of Governor Andros on 30 Dec 1686/9 Jan 1687.
