  1. Calhoun departed Santa Fe on 5 May 1852 for "the States." He died en route, most likely on 30 Jun 1852 and certainly before 2 Jul 1852, when his body was brought into Wyandotte territory (now in Kansas). Sumner assumed executive authority during Calhoun's absence and continued to exercise it after his death.
  2. Greiner received his commission as Secretary of the Territory on 28 Aug 1852 and took the oath of office on 30 Aug 1852 when the functions of the Governor devolved on him.
  3. Lane arrived in Santa Fe on 9 Sep 1852 and took the oath of office on 13 Sep 1852.
  4. Meriwether was commissioned as governor on 6 May 1853 and took the oath of office in Richmond, Virginia, on 20 May 1853. He arrived in Santa Fe and was inaugurated on 8 Aug 1853.
  5. Meriwether left Santa Fe for Washington, D.C., "on invitation from the government," and the functions of Governor devolved upon Secretary of the Territory Davis, who acted on behalf of the absent Meriwether. Having resigned his commission as Secretary, Davis also left New Mexico on 15 Oct 1857, whereupon the executive journal records that the executive department was left in the charge of the Governor's private secretary, Samuel Ellison.
  6. Rencher was commissioned as governor on 17 Aug 1857 for the term commencing on 31 Oct 1857. He arrived in Santa Fe on 11 Nov 1857 taking the oath of office on 12 Nov 1857.
  7. During the absence of Governor Connelly, the functions of the Governor devolved on:
