[2] The offices of Governor and Lieutenant Governor were declared vacant in accordance with Section 1 of An Ordinance Providing for Certain Amendments to the Constitution, passed by the Constitutional Convention (30 Jul 1861) held in Jefferson City after its occupation by the pro-Union forces (Missouri State Convention Journal, July 1861, pp. 20-23; Missouri State Convention Journal, October 1861, Appendix, pp. 3-4). Jackson refused to recognize his removal from the office and continued in dissidence, administering the government in parts of the State of Missouri not occupied by the United States. He left Missouri in late 1861 and died in Little Rock, Arkansas, 7 Dec 1862.
