1 Mar 1817 the inhabitants of the western part of the Mississippi Territory are authorized to form a constitution and state government and to assume a name for the future State, to be admitted to the United States when formed, in accordance with an act passed by the Congress of the United States (Senate on 31 Jan 1817, House of Representatives on 26 Feb 1817 with amendments, Senate concurred in amendments on 27 Feb 1817) and signed into law on 1 Mar 1817 (Statutes at Large, 3:348-349) [1]
