- Gorges arrived in Boston aboard the Desire on 12/22 June 1640 and most likely proceeded to Maine by the end of that month, as may be inferred from a land grant witnessed by him and from his letters to England. The minutes of the "first Generall Court" do not record his attendance on 25 Jun/5 Jul 1640, but a copy of the land grant bears his name and is dated 29 Jun 1640.
- It appears that, following the departure of Thomas Gorges in July 1643, the councillors appointed by Sir Ferdinando Gorges hesitated to elect a deputy governor in anticipation of instructions from the Proprietor. As no news had been received for two years, Vines was elected deputy governor on 21/31 Oct 1645, and the General Court established annual elections.
- Jocelyn was elected to succeed Vines in the event of the latter's departure. A letter addressed to the Massachusetts authorities on 18/28 Feb 1646 refers to Vines as having departed by that date. Jocelyn accepted the appointment as judge for the Province of Lygonia in 1648, but continued to serve as deputy governor of Maine until July 1649 or later.
- After the separation of Lygonia, which substantially reduced the territory of the Province of Maine, the remaining three towns of the province concluded an alliance in July 1649 and agreed to elect officers by the freemen. Godfrey was elected deputy governor in July 1649, or in any case before the General Court held on 16/26 Oct 1649. At the meeting of the General Court on 15/25 Oct 1650, his election as governor, "by the vote of the Countrey," was proclaimed. Godfrey is explicitly recorded as holding the office of governor at the courts held in 1650–1651. At a court held at Gorgeana (York) on 22 Nov/2 Dec 1652, Godfrey consented to submission to Massachusetts following a vote on the matter.
