- The Constitution of 1776 provided for the election of a legislative branch designated as "The HOUSE of ASSEMBLY" (Art. 3); however, the official style in use for its presiding officer was "Speaker of the Assembly."
- During the recess of the General Assembly between 10 Nov 1776 and 5 Jan 1777, executive authority was exercised by the Council of Safety.
