Assumed the functions of the President (Cumhurbaşkanı) 2 Feb 1966, acting for the absent incumbent who never resumed presidency; continued in office during a short period between the moment when the office of the President was declared vacant at the joint meeting of the Grand National Assembly (28 Mar 1966) and inauguration of Cevdet Sunay on the same day.
Bore the family name "Gündoğdu" before it was replaced with "Demirel".
