5 Dec 1936 the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic is named a constituent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in accordance with the Constitution (Basic Law) of the USSR (Konstitucija (Osnovnoj Zakon) Sojuza Sovetskih Socialističeskih Republik | Конституция (Основной Закон) Союза Советских Социалистических Республик) adopted by the Extraordinary All-Union Congress of Councils on 5 Dec 1936 in Moscow (USSR Eighth Congress of Councils Proceedings 1936, Bulletin No. 12, pp. 38-39; USSR Eighth Congress of Councils Proceedings 1936, Constitution, pp. 1-20) [1]

1 Jan 1990 Tajik (Persian) is recognized as the state language in accordance with a law passed by the Supreme Council (Soveti Olii | Совети Олии) щт 22 Jul 1989, effective on the date (1 Jan 1990) fixed by a resolution of the Supreme Council of 22 Jul 1989 (Soviet Tajikistan, No. 175, 30 Jul 1989, p. 1; Tajik SSR Supreme Council Records, No. 15, 1989, Art. 102)
24 Aug 1990 the sovereignty of the Tajik SSR is proclaimed in accordance with a declaration passed by the Supreme Council (Šūroi Olii | Шӯрои Олии) of the Tajik SSR on 24 Aug 1990 (Soviet Tajikistan, No. 194, 29 Aug 1990, p. 1)
31 Aug 1991 the name of the state is changed to the Republic of Tajikistan (Çumḩurii Toçikiston | Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон) in accordance with a law passed by the Supreme Council on 31 Aug 1991 (Soviet Tajikistan, No. 172, 4 Sep 1991, p. 1; Tajikistan Supreme Council Records, No. 18, 1991, Art. 226, p. 9) [2]
  1. The adoption of the Constitution of the USSR on 5 Dec 1936 mandated the change of the order of words in the polity style from Socialist Soviet to Soviet Socialist.
  2. From 1990: Çumḩurii Šūravii Sotsialistii Toçikiston (Ҷумҳурии Шӯравии Сотсиалистии Тоҷикистон).
  3. Also provided for amendments to the Constitution of 1978, replacing the former polity style with Çumḩurii Toçikiston.
