Catalonia: Presidents of the Generalitat: 1977-2024
The commencement of term of a President of the Generalitat is deemed to have started on the day of swearing-in ceremony which follows the election by the Parlament of Catalonia and appointment by a royal decree issued by the King of Spain. |

The order of succession in the office of President of the Generalitat was not precisely regulated in legal terms before the passing of a law of 23 Mar 1982 (Catalonia Official Gazette, No. 216, 21 Apr 1982, pp. 950-955) which stipulated that the President whose term ends with the election of a new Parlament continues in office to the day when his/her successor takes office. The office of President was not declared vacant, but the term of Tarradellas ended when a royal decree terminating his functions was signed on 28 Apr 1980. The swearing-in of Pujol, who had been elected by the Parlament 24 Apr 1980 and appointed by a royal decree of 28 Apr 1980, was delayed for a few days. |

In accordance with a royal decree of 27 Oct 2017 (effective upon publication 28 Oct 2017), the functions of the President of the Generalitat were assumed by the President of the Government of Spain and were simultaneously delegated to the Vice President of the Government and Minister for Territorial Administrations (Vicepresidenta del Gobierno y Ministra para las Administraciones Territoriales) María Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría Antón (28 Oct 2017 - 17 May 2018). |
