- Original style in official use: Presidente del Gobierno Vasco ES = Eusko Jaurlaritzako Lehendakari EUS. It is preserved in théroyal decrees of appointment to the office. A law on the government of the Basque Country (effective 27 Jul 1981) refers to the office as Lehendakari both in Spanish and Basque versions and the style is used in legislation (same for both languages).
- Garaikoetxea was designated as the Lehendakari by the Parliament (Parlamento | Legebiltzarra) of the Basque Country on 9 Apr 1980 and immediately took the oath of office, using a traditional formula (not prescribed by the law), before the appointment by a royal decree which followed on 13 Apr 1980.
