3 Mar 1962 Malta is designated to be known as the State of Malta in accordance with the Malta (Constitution) Order in Council, 1961, which was passed on 24 Oct 1961 and took effect upon the proclamation issued by the Governor of Malta on 3 Mar 1962 (Malta Government Gazette, No. 11,372, 3 Mar 1962, pp. 581-582; Statutory Instruments, 1961, Part III, pp. 4581-4630)

21 Sep 1964 Malta became an independent state in accordance with the Malta Independence Act 1964, which was passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom (House of Commons on 23 Jul 1964, House of Lords on 28 Jul 1964), received royal assent on 31 Jul 1964, and took effect on the appointed day, 21 Sep 1964, as fixed by the Malta Independence Order 1964 made on 2 Sep 1964 (Malta Government Gazette, No. 11,688, 18 Sep 1964, Supplement, pp. 7-76; Public General Acts, 1964, Part II, pp. 1305-1312) [1][2]
21 Sep 1964 the Constitution of Malta, set out in the Schedule to the Malta Independence Order 1964 (made on 2 Sep 1964), came into operation on the appointed day, 21 Sep 1964, as fixed by the same Order (Statutory Instruments, 1964, Part III, Section 1, pp. 3207-3271)
  1. The Malta (Constitution) Order in Council, 1961, defined the polity style as the State of Malta. The Constitution of 1964 referred to the polity exclusively as Malta.
