[3] The appeal of the army officers for proclamation of Dessalines as empereur and his positive response, backdated to 25 Jan 1804 and 15 Feb 1804 respectively, were announced to the army at Marchand 2 Sep 1804 and followed by public acclamation; formal inauguration of the reign was delayed until the coronation of Dessalines at Cap 8 Oct 1804.
[4] The name used in the promulgation of the Constitution of 1805 is Jacques Dessalines; legal documents issued in 1804-1806 are normally headed Jacques Ier, Jean-Jacques Ier, Jacques, Empereur Ier d'Haïti or Jean-Jacques Dessalines and normally signed as Dessalines or sometimes as Jacques.
[5] Proclaimed by the army as chef provisoire du gouvernement haïtien 16 Oct 1807 and accepts the nomination 23 Oct 1807, using chef du gouvernement as a style.
