6 Mar 1957 the territories constituting the Gold Coast—colony of Gold Coast, colony of Ashanti, the Northern Territories, and Northern Togoland—became an independent state under the name of Ghana in accordance with an act passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom (House of Commons on 18 Dec 1956, House of Lords on 5 Feb 1957, received Royal Assent on 7 Feb 1957), effective on 6 Mar 1957 (Public General Acts, 1957, pp. 1-13) [1]
