- Tshombe was elected president of the provincial government of Katanga on 16 Jun 1960 and took office on 30 Jun 1960.
- The Constitution promulgated on 5 Aug 1960 designated the President of the Government (Tshombe) as President of Katanga. A joint meeting of the National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale) and the Grand Council (Grand Conseil) was empowered to elect a President of Katanga; these bodies met on 8 Aug 1960, but no ballot was taken, and Tshombe was merely confirmed in office by acclamation.
