  1. Ralph Darling was commissioned as Captain General and Governor-in-Chief of New South Wales and the Island of Van Diemen's Land. He arrived to Van Diemen's Land where his commission was read and published on 3 Dec 1825. On the same day he issued a proclamation, erecting the island into a separate colony. Darling sailed for New South Wales on 6 Dec 1825 and the functions of Governor-in-Chief devolved on Lieutenant Governor Arthur who was sworn in on 10 Dec 1825.
  2. In succession to Darling, the governors of New South Wales were commissioned as governors of the Island of Van Diemen's Land: Bourke (25 Jun 1831), Gipps (5 Oct 1837; died on 28 Feb 1847), and FitzRoy (31 Dec 1850). However, they did not assume the government, and their commissions were never published, while lieutenant governors of Van Diemen's Land served in their absence.
  3. Also in South Australia.
