  1. Approved as Director Provisorio de la Confederación Argentina by Art. 18 of the San Nicolás Agreement (Acuerdo de San Nicolás, actually signed 1 Jun 1852 and backdated to 31 May 1852); took oath of office 1 Jun 1852.
  2. The Constitution of 1853 as amended in 1860 provided for the exercise of the national executive power by a citizen with the title of Presidente de la Nación Argentina ("Art. 74: El Poder Ejecutivo de la Nación será desempeñado por un ciudadano con el título de «Presidente de la Nación Argentina»"). However, this style was completely out of official use in the period of 1862-1910 when Presidente de la República and Presidente de la República Argentina were invariably applied in promulgation of legal acts. After the inauguration of Roque Sáenz Peña (12 Oct 1910), Presidente de la Nación Argentina and Presidente de la Nación gradually took precedence, although Presidente de la República was also used.
  3. Before assuming the command of the army, Derqui provisionally transferred executive authority to Vice President Pedernera (19 Sep 1861). After a military defeat, Derqui informed Pedernera that he ceases to exercise the functions of office (5 Nov 1861), pending the acceptance of his resignation by the Congress. The decision of Derqui and assumption of the functions of President of the Republic by Pedernera were communicated to the provincial governors on 8 Nov 1861.
  4. A decree signed by Vice President Pedernera on 12 Dec 1861 declared that the national executive went "in recess." In early 1862, the provincial legislatures adopted a number of laws, empowering the Governor of Buenos Aires to assume the functions of federal chief executive. Mitre formally accepted this nomination by a decree dated 12 Apr 1862.
  5. Original name: Faustino Valentín de Quiroga Sarmiento Albarracín.
  6. In full: Manuel Pedro de (la) Quintana y Sáenz de (la) Gaona.
  7. Earlier form of name: Victorino de la Plaza y Palacios.
  8. Original name: Ramón Antonio Castillo Barrionuevo (the meaning of the adopted initial S. is undocumented); ceased to exercise the functions of office on 4 Jun 1943; resignation dated 5 Jun 1943.
