A descendant of a Protestant family; protégé of Prince de Conde; entered military service as sublieutenant of dragoons (1773); promoted to captain (1777), mestre de camp (1780), colonel (1788); member of the Club of Feulliants; elected to the Assemblée nationale (National Assembly) (1791-1792); promoted to maréchal de camp (1792); resigned from the Assembly (30 Jul 1792); emigrated to Switzerland (1793); returned to France (1799); named a member of the Tribunat (from 25 Dec 1799); served as President of the Tribunat (25 Oct 1802 - 23 Nov 1802); member of the Sénat conservateur (from 31 Oct 1803); accompanied Joseph Bonaparte to Naples; created count (1808); appointed a member of the Provisional Government (1 Apr 1814 - 14 Apr 1814); appointed minister of state and a peer of France (13 May 1814); promoted lieutenant general (1814); interim minister for foreign affairs (4 Jun 1814 - 20 Mar 1815); minister for marine and colonies (9 Jul 1815 - 26 Sep 1815).
