| Attended school (1944-1948) and gymnasium in Vienna (1948-1956); studied law and state management in the University of Vienna (1956-1961); earned doctorate in law (1961); law practice in the Club of Socialist members of the Austrian parliament (1962-1963); secretary of the Club of Socialist members of parliament (1963-1975); elected a member of the Nationalrat (1971-1983, 1987-2004), representing the electoral district of Vienna; executive chairman of the Club of Socialist members of parliament (1975-1983); from 1979 to 2004 served as deputy chairman of the Socialist Party (Sozialistische Partei Österreichs; from 1991 Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreichs); appointed federal minister for science and research (24 May 1983 - 21 Jan 1987) in the Cabinets of Fred Sinowatz and Franz Vranitzky; chairman of the Club of Socialist members of parliament (1987-1990); elected President of the Nationalrat (5 Nov 1990 - 20 Dec 2002); president of the fifteenth Bundesversammlung (8 Jul 1998); Second President of the Nationalrat (20 Dec 2002 - 16 Jun 2004); elected Bundespräsident (25 Apr 2004).
