[1] Jefferson was elected on 1 Jun 1779 and accepted the election by a letter submitted to the House of Delegates and to the Senate on 2 Jun 1779. The certificate of taking the oath of office is not known to be extant. He was re-elected on 2 Jun 1780 and was last present at the session of the Privy Council or Council of State on 2 Jun 1781.
[2] Following the expiration of the term of Thomas Jefferson as Governor (presumably on 2 Jun 1781), the functions of the office devolved on the President of the Privy Council or Council of State, but this office had been vacant since 13 or 14 May 1781; William Fleming, a member of the Council, exercised some executive functions of government de facto.
[3] The office of Governor became vacant on 22 Nov 1781 when Nelson submitted his resignation while the office of his constitutional successor, the President of the Council of State, had become vacant earlier. The Council lacked quorum between 22 Nov 1781 and 30 Nov 1781 inclusively. Harrison was elected on 30 Nov 1781 and took oath of office on 1 Dec 1781.
[4] Patrick Henry was elected on 25 Nov 1796, but declined to serve.
