[2] Philippe de Villiers was elected Magnus Magister on 22 Jan 1521 at the session of the Council in Rhodes. He and the members of the Council of the Order landed in Malta on 26 Oct 1530 near the present city of Birgu. The formal ceremony of enfeoffment took place at the gates of Mdina (Città Notabile) on 13 Nov 1530.

[4] Pietro del Ponte was elected in absentia on 26 Aug 1534 and took office on 10 Nov 1534.
[5] Acting for the absent Grand Masters Didier de Saint-Jaille and Juan de Omedes.
[6] Didier de Saint-Jaille, dit Tholon, was elected in absentia on 22 Nov 1535 and never took office. He died in Montpellier, France, on 26 Sep 1536.
[7] Johan de Omedes i Coscón was elected in absentia on 20 Oct 1536 and took office on 21 Jan 1538.
[8] Acting for the absent Grand Master Claude de La Sengle.
[9] Claude de La Sengle was elected in absentia on 11 Sep 1553 and took office on 2 Jan 1554.
[10] Born: Pietro di Francesco Guidalotti Ciocchi.
[11] Deposed and was held in custody (12 Jul 1581 - 11 Sep 1581) on orders of the Council. Released and departed Malta for Rome where he died on 21 Dec 1581.
