1 Oct 1960 becomes an independent state on a date prescribed by Art. 1 (1) of the Nigeria Independence Act, 1960
1 Oct 1963 Constitution of the Federation, providing for establishment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (section 2), takes effect on a date prescribed by section 127 (Federation of Nigeria Official Gazette, Extraordinary, No. 71, Lagos - 19th September, 1963, Vol. 50, Supplement - Part A, pp. A91-A171) [2]

24 May 1966 name changed in accordance with section 1 of the Constitution (Suspension and Modification) (No. 5) Decree 1966 [Decree No. 34] which takes effect on a date prescribed by the same section (Federal Republic of Nigeria Official Gazette, Extraordinary, No. 51, Lagos - 24th May, 1966, Vol. 53, Supplement - Part A, pp. A153-A159)
