Biography:

After training as a physician, Gómez Farías was influenced by French liberal political ideas and participated in the Mexican struggle for independence during the 1820s, and served as senator for Jalisco (1825-1830) and minister of treasury (1833). In 1833 he was elected vice president in the administration of Antonio López de Santa Anna, who instead of assuming office, however, pleaded illness and withdrew into semiretirement delegating the presidency to Gómez Farías. He was sworn in on 1 Apr 1833, and immediately obtained legislation that reduced the number of generals, ended the special privileges of the military, and created a civilian militia. Gómez Farías served in that capacity until Santa Anna's return on 16 May 1833 and again assumed the presidency on 3 Jun 1833 [2, vol. V, p. 169] as Santa Anna took command of the army to subdue insurrections of Morelia and Tlalpan (returned to exercising the duties on 18 Jun 1833). Another case of substitution occurred in the period 5/6 Jul 1833 to 27 Oct 1833, while Santa Anna fought insurrections and defeated General Arista at Guanajuato on 12 Oct 1833. Santa Anna took another leave of absence on 15 Dec 1833, on the pretext of illness, and Gómez Farías returned as acting president from 16 Dec 1833. However, the uproar from the offended interests brought Santa Anna back to power (24 Apr 1834), and the Congress voted (27 Jan 1835) termination of Gómez Farías' term as vice president. He was forced to flee to New Orleans (1835).
