As interim president Miguel Barragán contracted typhus and became unable to perform presidential duties, the Congress named the minister of justice José Justo Corro as interim president to serve during Barragán's illness and to succeed him if he dies. After Barragán died on 1 Mar 1836, Corro continued in the office as interim president until he was replaced by the Constitutional President Anastasio Bustamante on 19 Apr 1837. During his presidency, the new constitution (Siete Leyes) replaced the federal Constitution of 1824 and went into effect on 1 Jan 1837. The states were transformed into military districts and the presidential term was extended from four to eight years. |
