Biography:

Joined an infantry regiment of Celaya (1811); participated in the war of independence; became a close associate of Antonio López de Santa Anna; commander and military governor of Oaxaca; governor of Cuernavaca; governor of the State of México; chaired a military council convened at the convention of Santo Domingo, Oaxaca, to judge General Vicente Guerrero; supported Plan de Casa Mata (1832); revolted (1833) against Valentín Gómez Farías to protect the interests of Santa Anna; promoted to division general (1841); on a number of occasions, Santa Anna took leave of absence, leaving Canalizo as acting president (1843-1844); as acting president suspended the sessions of the Congress (decree of 29 Nov 1844, promulgated 2 Dec 1844); faced a rebellion supported by the legislators; dismissed by resolution of the Congress on 13 Dec 1844; retired from political activities.
