Biography:

Secretary for internal and external relations in the government of President Vicente Guerrero, José María de Bocanegra, was elected interim president by the Chamber of Deputies on 16 Dec 1829 to fill in the vacancy caused by the departure of President Guerrero to suppress the military revolt headed by vice president Anastasio Bustamante, who announced the Plan de Jalapa against the dictatorial powers of Guerrero. Considering the election of Bocanegra illegitimate, the Senate refused to appear to validate his executive oath. However, Guerrero issued an emergency decree convoking the Chamber of Deputies and Bocanegra took the oath on 17 Dec 1829, before the Chamber of Deputies. Guerrero was notified of this officially on 18 Dec 1829, on which date the interim president began his tenure. On 23 Dec 1829, the garrison of Mexico City rebelled in support of the Plan de Jalapa and made some allegations to nullify Bocanegra's appointment. It urged the Council of Government to appoint a provisional executive, which replaced Bocanegra. The Chamber of Deputies elected him (19 Jan 1835) a minister of the Supreme Court of Justice. During the administration of Anastasio Bustamante Bocanegra held the office of President of the Supreme Court of Justice from 1839 to 1841.
