General Barragán distinguished himself as a military commander in Veracruz, when he captured Fuerte de Ulúa, the last stronghold of the Spaniards on Mexican territory. He served as war and navy minister in the government of General Antonio López de Santa Anna and was elected Interim President by the Chamber of Deputies on 27 Jan 1835, to substitute Santa Anna, who took leave of absence. His appointment was connected with a constitutional crisis as the Congress on 26 Jan 1835, refused to approve Vice President Valentín Gómez Farías as acting president and picked Barragán to exercise these functions on the next day. While Barragán exercised the functions of interim president, Santa Anna returned as the commander-in-chief of the Mexican army and defeated insurgents under Salinas in Battle of Guadalupe, Zacatecas, in May 1835. As Barragán contracted typhus and his health was seriously aggravating, the Congress named the minister of justice José Justo Corro as interim president to serve during Barragán's illness and to succeed him if he dies. Barragán died at 01:30 on 1 Mar 1836, in the National Palace. |
