Biography:

In reaction to a liberal coup d'état in Spain, the conservatives in Mexico advocated independence. Agustín Iturbide assumed command of the army and allied his force with General Vicente Guerrero. Iturbide's Plan de Iguala (24 Feb 1821) proclaimed three guarantees: immediate independence from Spain, equality for Spaniards and Creoles, and the supremacy of Roman Catholicism and a ban on all other religions. The Army of the Three Guarantees (Ejército Trigarante) quickly subjugated the country; on 24 Aug 1821, Iturbide and Juan O'Donojú, representative of the Spanish king, signed the Tratado de Córdoba, recognizing the independence of the Mexican Empire (Imperio Mexicano) and establishing the Junta Provisional Gubernativa, acting as supreme body in the expectation of acceptance of the imperial crown by King Fernando VII [2]. Before his army entered Mexico City, Iturbide himself picked 38 members of the Junta, who held two preliminary meetings in Tacubaya (22 Sep 1821 and 25 Sep 1821). The official installment of this new body took place in Mexico City on 28 Sep 1821. Later in the evening, the Junta issued the Act of Independence of the Mexican Empire [3] and elected the members of imperial Regency. Information source: [4][5]
