Stulginskis ceased to exercise the functions of office following the election of a successor (7 Jun 1926) in accordance with Art. 44 of the Constitution of 1922, but the Constitution did not make a provision for exercising the functions of Respublikos Prezidentas during the vacancy. Grinius was sworn in 8 Jun 1926. |

Grinius submitted a letter of resignation (dated 18 Dec 1926) to the president of the Seimas stating it would be effective on the same date. On 19 Dec 1926 the letter was submitted to the Seimas which did not act on resignation and immediately proceeded with the election of a successor who was sworn in the same day. |
