[1] The establishment on 27 Dec 1806 of République d'Haïti almost immediately led to a de-facto partition of the country into the polity that evolved into the Royaume d'Haïti, centred in the North, and République d'Haïti, centred in the South; each of the two entities claiming authority over the entire territory of the nation. The de-facto partition ended with the extinction of the Royaume d'Haïti on 8 Oct 1820 and the incorporation of its teritory into the République d'Haïti on 26 Oct 1820.
