Biography:

Originated from the family of medical advisor and court doctor, Carl Gottlob Benjamin Becher; attended a gymnasium in Stuttgart; studied philosophy and law in the Corps Suevia, Tübingen (1832-1839); passed final examinations as lawyer in 1841; admitted to the bar in Tettnang (1841); legal advisor in Ravensburg (1842); worked as a manager of the enterprise owned by his father (from 1843); engaged in activities of local liberal democrats led by Julius Haußmann; elected a member of the Landtag of the Kingdom of Württemberg (1847-1848); participated in the Heidelberg Assembly (1848); founding member of the People's Associations (Volksvereine) in Stuttgart; though not a member of the Nationalversammlung (National Assembly), he was elected a member of the German Reich Regency (6 Jun 1849); fled to Switzerland (1849); was charged with committing high treason (1851) in Stuttgart, acquitted (1852); returned to Stuttgart, where continued law practice; since the beginning of the 1860s was affiliated with the Fortschrittspartei (Progressive Party); elected to the Landtag (1862-1868, 1877-1882, 1883-1890); one of the founders of the Württembergische Volkspartei (Württemberg People's Party) in 1864; member of the Zollparlament (Customs Parliament, 1869-1870); elected to the Community Council of Stuttgart (1877-1883).
