Biography:

Admitted to the bar in Paris (1778); practiced law at Reims before the outbreak of the Revolution in 1789; as a negotiator, took part in the events of 14 Jul 1789, when the Bastille was stormed; was named a tribunal judge for the district of Sézanne (1790); became a member of the Jacobin Club; elected to the Assemblée nationale (National Assembly) (1791-1792) as a representative of the département of Marne; Vice President of the National Assembly (17 Sep 1792 - 21 Sep 1792); elected (3 Sep 1792) to the Convention nationale (National Convention) (1792-1795) as a deputy for the département of Marne; voted for the death sentence at the trial of King Louis XVI; on many occasions spoke against the Girondins and called Maximilien Robespierre "moderate"; served as Vice-President (9 Apr 1793 - 18 Apr 1793) and President of the National Convention (27 Jun 1793 - 11 Jul 1793); was elected to the Comité de salut public (Committee of Public Safety) (10 Jul 1793 - 20 Sep 1793, 31 Jul 1794 - 5 Dec 1794); in absence of Jean-Marie Collot d'Herbois, chaired part of the session of the Convention on 9 Thermidor, Year II (27 Jul 1794), refusing to allow Robespierre to make a speech; was elected president of the Jacobin Club (5 Aug 1794 - 24 Aug 1794); accused of preparing the Jacobin insurrection against the Convention; ordered to be arrested (21 May 1795); escaped and went into hiding until the amnesty of 26 Oct 1795; appointed (14 Nov 1796) a commissioner to the civil and criminal tribunals of Marne; served as deputy judge and judge in the criminal tribunal of Seine; assumed positions in the imperial court of appeals; banished as a regicide (1816) and died in exile. [2] Elected to serve as vice-président until the end of the term of President Jean-François-Bertrand Delmas, who entered the Committee of Public Safety (7 Apr 1793) and was not able to preside at each session of the Convention ("... vice-président, lequel remplacera le président actuel pendant la durée de l'exercice...") [1, vol. LXI, p. 494]. Thuriot presided at most of the sessions from 9 Apr 1793 to 18 Apr 1793. Delmas assumed the chair at the evening session of 18 Apr 1793, when Marc-David Alba, dit Lasource was elected president and immediately replaced his predecessor.
