Studied and apprenticed in Paris and obtained his license in law from the Parlement of Dijon (1773); became advocate in the bailliage of Chaumont (31 Aug 1773); had a keen interest in paleography; served as procureur of the commune of Chaumont (from 27 Jan 1790); administrator of the département of Haute-Marne (from 5 Jun 1791); elected (31 Aug 1791) as a representative of Haute-Marne to the Assemblée nationale (National Assembly) (1791-1792); elected to the Convention nationale (National Convention) (1792-1795) as a deputy for Haute-Marne; sided with the Montagnards; voted for the death sentence at the trial of King Louis XVI; member of the Comité de sûreté générale (Committee of General Security); served as President of the National Convention (6 Nov 1793 - 21 Nov 1793); member of the Comité de salut public (Committee of Public Safety) (31 Jul 1794 - 5 Nov 1794); selected for sitting in the Conseil des Cinq-Cents (Council of Five Hundred) (1795-1798) as a former member of the Convention; President of the Council of Five Hundred (19 Feb 1797 - 21 Mar 1797); member of the Conseil des Anciens (Council of Ancients) (1798-1799), where represented Haute-Marne; President of the Council of Ancients (18 Aug 1798 - 23 Sep 1798); supported the coup of 18 Brumaire, Year VIII (9 Nov 1799 - 10 Nov 1799); named a member of the Tribunat (25 Dec 1799 - 16 Sep 1802); member of the council for maritime trophies (from 30 Oct 1802); banned as a regicide (1816) and moved to Mons, Netherlands (now in Belgium); was allowed to return to France (25 Dec 1818), but stayed abroad until 1830; spent the last years working in the archives of Champagne.
