| Descended from the family of rich Bordeaux merchants; resided in the Netherlands before the outbreak of the Revolution (1789); served as a municipal officer at Bordeaux, joined the local Jacobin Club; elected (7 Sep 1792) to the Convention nationale (National Convention) (1792-1793) as a deputy for the département of Gironde; was a member of the committees for commerce and colonies; voted for the death sentence in the trial of King Louis XVI; served as President of the National Convention (2 May 1793 - 16 May 1793) and chaired the first meeting gathered at a new venue of sessions — salle des Machines, Palais des Tuileries (10 May 1793); was nominated (21 May 1793) a member of the Commission des Douze (Commission of Twelve) to ensure security of the Girondin-dominated Convention; refused to approve the arrest of extreme radical leader Hébert sanctioned by the commission; survived initial purge of the Convention in the course of a Montagnard coup d'état (2 Jun 1793); continued to sit in the Convention and energetically defended the arrested Girondins; accused by the decree of the Convention (3 Oct 1793) and condemned to death by the revolutionary tribunal (30 Oct 1793); guillotined (31 Oct 1793). | |||||||
