[1] The ambiguity of the Constitutional situation leaves it unclear whether this was a vacancy or a substitution of Jiǎng Zhōngzhèng who made a statement announcing his retirement effective 21 Jan 1949 (Presidential Office Gazette, No. 210, 22 Jan 1949, p. 1). The functions of office devolved on Vice President Lǐ Zōngrén who assumed the office of Acting President. Following the resumption of the office of President by Jiǎng Zhōngzhèng on 1 Mar 1950 (Presidential Office Gazette, Extraordinary, 3 Mar 1950, p. 1), Lǐ Zōngrén refused to recognise his authority and claimed he would continue in office.
[2] Jiǎng Zhōngzhèng died at 23:50 5 Apr 1975. The functions of office devolved on Vice President Yán Jiāgàn who took an oath of office as President at 11:00 6 Apr 1975.
