Lower Canada: Governors: 1791-1841

The Governors-in-Chief of the Province of Lower Canada were also commissioned as Governors-in-Chief of the Province of Upper Canada, but invariably abstained from assuming the latter office except for the period starting on 22 Nov 1839. The references to Upper Canada (Haut-Canada) were nevertheless included as part of the style.

  4. Drummond departed for the United Kingdom on 21 May 1816. The government devolved on John Wilson, who served as Administrator of the Government (21 May 1816 - 12 Jul 1816) during the absence of Drummond whose commission remained valid to 12 Jul 1816.
  5. The Duke of Richmond died on 28 Aug 1819 near the settlement of Richmond, Lower Canada. The administration of the government devolved on the senior member of the Executive Council, James Monk, who was absent from the seat of government. He arrived and took the oath of office on 20 Sep 1819.

  7. The Earl of Dalhousie and the Executive Council were informed of the approval of appointment of Sir James Kempt as Captain General and Governor-in-Chief of Lower Canada on 8 Sep 1828. On that day Kempt also received his commission as Administrator of the Government and took the oaths of office. However, his commission as Governor-in-Chief was never prepared and the appointment of the Earl of Dalhousie remained vaild to 4 Feb 1831.

  9. William Pitt Amherst, Earl Amherst was commissioned Captain General and Governor-in-Chief of the Province of Lower Canada on 2 Apr 1835, but never took office.

The Earl of Durham was commissioned as Captain General and Governor-in-Chief in and over the Province of Lower Canada (30 Mar 1838), High Commissioner for the adjustment of certain important questions depending in the Provinces of Lower and Upper Canada respecting the form and future government of the Provinces [and] Governor General of all the Provinces on the Continent of North America, and of the Islands of Prince Edward and Newfoundland (31 Mar 1838). In legislation, he used exclusively the title of Governor General.
