[2] After the capture of Kabul (27 Sep 1996) by the armed forces of the Islamic Movement of Taliban (Da Afghānistān da T̤alibāno Islāmī Taḥrīk | د افغانستان د طالبانو اسلامي تحریك), Rabbānī and his government continued to control part of the territory of Afghanistan, mostly reduced to the Badakhshan Province and adjacent regions (1996-2001). Rabbānī returned to Kabul on 17 Nov 2001 and eventually handed executive authority to the Interim Administration on 22 Dec 2001.
